Who is Ibonia?

Ibonia states that it grew out of software engineering for banks and MFIs, before becoming a publisher of its own fintech (financial technology) platforms. Its promise: "Digital infrastructure that brings financial services closer together."

The Papi legal notice describes Ibonia as a "limited liability company under Malagasy law" with share capital of 10,400,000 ariary (Ar, the Malagasy currency). It gives its RCS (trade register), NIF and STAT numbers, which cannot be verified online in a Malagasy register. Date of creation, headcount, turnover and management are not published.

What services does Ibonia offer?

The Ibonia website presents three products and a services activity:

  • Papi: a single integration point for accepting mobile money (payment by mobile phone) and bank cards, with an API. Target: merchants and platforms.

  • Mapi: sending business SMS and customer notifications through several operators. Target: companies.

  • Agency Banking: agent networks to help banks and MFIs extend their coverage.

  • Services for financial institutions: integration with core banking systems (banks' central software), digitalisation, web and mobile channels, operational reliability.

The Mapi website displays, among others, the logos of ACEP, Bank of Africa and SunKing; Papi names no clients. The website presents neither consultant provision, nor a call centre, nor dedicated teams.

How much does Ibonia cost?

Ibonia publishes the pricing of its two platforms, not that of Agency Banking or banking integration. TTC means all taxes included, HT excluding VAT.

Papi: a commission per payment

According to the Papi pricing page, there are no fixed fees.

Mapi: prepaid SMS packs

The Mapi price list has seven packs, from 100 SMS for 8,000 Ar excl. VAT (Starter) to 20,000 SMS for 800,000 Ar excl. VAT (Enterprise). An SMS costs from 80 to 40 Ar excl. VAT depending on volume, with a validity of 30 to 90 days. Support is by email, and also by phone from the Advanced pack onwards.

Where do Ibonia's teams work?

Ibonia is based in Antananarivo. The website gives two addresses: the Papi legal notice places the head office at 33 rue Ratsimilaho, Antaninarenina, and the Ibonia home page shows a contact address in Ambohidepona. According to this notice, Papi is hosted "within the European Union". Service hours and certifications are not published.

What do reviews say about Ibonia?

No customer or employee reviews of Ibonia were found on Trustpilot, Google, Glassdoor or Indeed. The two testimonials published on the Mapi website are company communication, not independent reviews.

Points to check before choosing Ibonia

  1. Do you offer dedicated staff or a call centre?

  2. Which entity signs the contract, and at what address?

  3. Are the RCS, NIF and STAT numbers confirmed by the Malagasy register?

  4. Papi, Transit mode: what is the exact payout timeframe?

  5. Papi, Direct mode: what is the total cost, including operator or bank fees?

  6. Mapi: what happens to unused SMS? A refund is mentioned only for the Medium pack.

  7. Agency Banking: what quote for the set-up?

  8. What security evidence and which hosting provider?

Which companies is Ibonia suited to?

According to its website, Ibonia targets banks and MFIs in Madagascar and Africa, merchants that accept mobile money and cards, and companies that send SMS. Its strengths: published, detailed pricing, no fixed fee on Papi, and a website in French and English. It does not describe any offer for outsourcing a support function.
