Who is SmartOne?
The company uses several names: "SmartOne.ai" on its website, "SmartOne Group" in the 2022 press and "SmartOne, Inc." on AWS Marketplace. Its privacy policy mentions "SmartOne.ai™ Inc." and refers to Canadian and Quebec law.
No company number was found in any open registry, in Quebec, Madagascar or France. As SmartOne is not a French company, it has no French company registration number (SIREN). No revenue figure is published.
Origins and founding date
According to the press, the company started in 2012 in Madagascar as a call centre. The website and LinkedIn also give 2012, but the AWS listing states a founding in 2016, and a 2023 press release mentions more than 300 projects since 2016. The move of the headquarters to Montreal was announced in June 2023, alongside a partnership with Mila, the Quebec AI research institute. No parent group is declared.
Management and acquisitions
The About page presents a co-founding chief executive, a co-founding president, a site director in Madagascar and vice-presidents (finance, production, sales). However, a press release of 5 December 2024, relayed by CMSWire, announces a new chief executive, with the former leader joining the board. Sources point sometimes to one management team, sometimes to the other: the current composition of the management team could not be confirmed.
On 15 February 2024, SmartOne acquired Nadeau Innovations, a Montreal-based AI and robotics consultancy founded in 2017, whose founder became chief technology officer (CTO).
Recent news
In June 2022, SmartOne signed a joint AI training programme for young Malagasy people with Orange Madagascar. In 2026, the Malagasy press reported a two-year renewable agreement with the University of Antananarivo (April) and a partnership with the Esmia Innovation school (September) covering recruitment, internships and training. No insolvency proceedings, litigation or controversy were found.
What services does SmartOne offer?
SmartOne presents itself as a provider of "human-in-the-loop data services": data prepared or checked by people to train and evaluate AI systems. Its core business is data annotation, not the outsourcing of support functions.
Annotation and synthetic data
The Services page lists four offerings: "Synthetic Data", "Data Labeling for AI", "Physical AI Data Annotation" and "Smart Edge Specialists". According to its website, the company handles text, images, audio, video and sensor data. It also offers data collection and claims a capacity "from hundreds to millions of annotations", across more than 40 industries according to a press release.
The synthetic data offering, launched on 6 March 2025, relies on the Blender, Quixel Megascans and Unity software. The AWS listing mentions an integration with Amazon SageMaker; the website does not name any annotation platform. On Hugging Face, the company states "over 1.5 billion data points" annotated since 2012.
Tech Workforce: dedicated developers
Launched on 12 February 2025, the "Tech Workforce" offering provides web, front-end, full-stack and mobile developers, engineers and data scientists (React, Angular, Flutter, Python, Java, C#, etc.). According to the press release, the teams are dedicated, with SLAs (service level agreements) and regular reporting, in French and English.
The undated Hugging Face presentation also mentions a "Workforce as a service" for "back-office work" and "customer service". SmartOne's website, however, lists no support profiles (accountant, assistant, after-sales service, HR).
How much does SmartOne cost?
SmartOne's website publishes no amount. Its Pricing page presents three models, all on quote: "Per Hour" (hourly, with no long-term commitment), "Per Project" (fixed cost, flagged as the best seller) and "Per Annotator" (an adjustable dedicated team).
The only public amount appears on AWS Marketplace: USD 5.50 per hour, billed in 10-second increments, with no minimum volume or long-term commitment. The listing is undated, AWS infrastructure costs may be added, and the website does not say whether this rate applies to a direct contract.
Announced terms
SmartOne displays "No minimum volumes. No hidden fees." and offers a free POC (proof of concept, a pilot project): a batch of free annotation hours, the number of which is not specified. According to the website, all offerings include a 95% data compliance guarantee with free re-annotation, team size adjustment and data security.
A special rate is available on request for universities, research institutes and non-profits. The Tech Workforce offering works on quote, with no rate per profile. Set-up fees are not specified.
Where do SmartOne's teams work?
According to the About page, production relies on a site in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. The AWS listing also mentions "secure facilities" in Kenya. The Contact page publishes four addresses: Montreal, Paris, Mauritius and Antananarivo; in 2023, the company also cited London.
For Montreal, the website gives one address (Contact page) in one place and another (privacy policy) elsewhere. The split of annotators by country, working hours and the share of remote work are not published. The Tech Workforce offering advertises hours adapted to the Americas and the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa).
Headcount and data security
The headcount varies by source: more than 1,000 annotators and a range of 1,001 to 5,000 employees on LinkedIn, more than 1,000 people in December 2024, about 1,200 in 2023 and more than 1,200 annotators on AWS. No registry makes it possible to verify this.
On 13 December 2024, SmartOne announced its SOC 2 Type II certification, a US audit framework for data security, without naming the auditor or the scope. The AWS listing, for its part, states "SOC 2 Type 1 compliant". No public evidence of ISO 27001 or ISO 9001 certification was found.
What do reviews say about SmartOne?
No public customer reviews of SmartOne were found. The SmartOne.ai Trustpilot profile shows 0 reviews and no rating. The G2 page was not accessible and no other platform yielded usable reviews. On the employee side, Glassdoor was not accessible and no Indeed page was found.
The website publishes its own references: case studies for Interius Farms (vertical farming) and SURGAR (augmented-reality-assisted surgery), and testimonials from executives at Neovision and Onya. A case study with no client name claims 99% accuracy and a 35% cost reduction. These claims come from the company and have not been independently verified.
What are SmartOne's strengths?
Based on public information:
A clear specialisation: annotation of text, images, audio, video and sensor data, plus synthetic data and dedicated developers.
A no-commitment entry point, as announced: free POC, no minimum volume, three billing models.
A public price on AWS Marketplace (USD 5.50 per hour), which gives an order of magnitude.
A 95% compliance guarantee with free re-annotation and an announced SOC 2 Type II certification.
Activity since 2012 and partnerships with Mila, the University of Antananarivo, Esmia Innovation and Orange Madagascar.
Points to check before choosing SmartOne
These questions cover what public sources do not specify.
What is the price? The website gives no amount; only the AWS listing shows USD 5.50 per hour. Ask for the applicable rate, what it includes and whether it matches the AWS price.
Does your need fall within the scope? The offering covers annotation and AI engineering. For back-office or support profiles, ask whether SmartOne provides them and under what contract: Hugging Face mentions a "workforce as a service", the website does not.
How many people on your project? The headcount varies by source. Ask for the number of people assigned to your type of project, by site.
Where will the work be done? Sources cite Madagascar, Kenya (AWS), Mauritius and Paris. Ask for the production location and whether any of it is subcontracted.
What does the SOC 2 certification cover? The press release announces a Type II, the AWS listing a Type 1. Ask for the report or attestation, its date, its scope, and any ISO certifications.
Who signs the contract? The management shown differs by source. Ask for your contractual contact and the signing legal entity (Canadian, Malagasy or other company).
Which references can you contact? No independent review is published. Ask for reachable clients on a comparable project.
What does the free POC include? Ask for the number of free hours, the success criteria and the method used to measure the 95% guarantee.
Which companies is SmartOne suited to?
Based on its public offering, SmartOne targets teams building AI systems that need volumes of annotated data: startups, research institutes and large companies ("Fortune 500", according to the company), in tech, agriculture, industry, healthcare or finance. The Tech Workforce offering is aimed at companies looking for dedicated developers, in French or English. SmartOne is a weaker fit for SMEs that want to bring in an accountant, an assistant or a customer account manager, as the website does not list these profiles.
What are the alternatives to SmartOne?
The choice depends on the need: annotating data for AI, or bringing in dedicated team members. Ingedata and isahit do the same job as SmartOne; MaaSil does a different one.
Ingedata
Ingedata annotates and prepares datasets for computer vision (healthcare, Earth observation, industry, robotics). Its website lists the ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 27001 standards. The entity is registered in Singapore and partnered with Orange Madagascar in July 2026 on AI training, according to the Malagasy press.
isahit
isahit offers a managed human workforce for AI (annotation, evaluation) and back-office data processing, based on an "impact sourcing" model. It claims more than 1,000 annotators and B Corp certification. Its rates are not published.
MaaSil Inc
MaaSil, the publisher of this article, is based in Paris and practises employer of record (EoR) staffing of consultants based in Madagascar, fully integrated into the client's teams. According to MaaSil, the company handles recruitment, contract, payroll and HR follow-up; the client directs the assignments day to day.
MaaSil publishes its rates on its Pricing page: €55 to €100 excl. VAT per day for general profiles (accounting, customer service, HR, administrative assistance, legal), or about €1,150 excl. VAT per month. Senior IT developers cost €120 to €250 excl. VAT per day, or about €2,600 excl. VAT per month. MaaSil claims more than 100 consultants and more than 40 clients (see why choose MaaSil).
By its own criteria, MaaSil suits French-speaking SMEs, startups and mid-sized companies that want to bring in dedicated team members for support, back-office or IT. It is less suited to very short projects, round-the-clock multilingual volumes and needs delivered solely in France. To annotate large volumes of data or pay by the hour, SmartOne, Ingedata or isahit are a better fit. See also our guide on selecting an outsourced provider.
