Outsourcing to Malawi: costs, profiles and cities (2026)

Page updated on 22 October 2026. Public data checked; sources at the end of the page.

Malawi is a very early-stage outsourcing market: no public statistics for the sector and no documented export provider in 2025-2026. Strengths: English, the only official language, and a minimum wage of MWK 157,500 a month (about €79). The UTC+2 time zone leaves 8 to 9 shared office hours with Paris. Limits: 15.6% access to electricity in 2024, an official exchange rate far from the parallel market, and a mandatory visa for French citizens.

Why outsource to Malawi?

Strengths. English as the official language, a time zone close to Europe with no clock change, and market salaries well below European levels.

Limits. The market is tiny: no statistics, no Kearney 2023 or Ataraxis 2026 ranking, and no national BPO (business process outsourcing) policy. Electricity and internet are not widely available; English is measured as low.

"Outsourcing" here means services delivered remotely, not the export of workers to the Middle East.

The job market in Malawi

Unemployment has three measures: 5.07% in 2025 (ILO model), 18.5% in the 2018 census (ages 15-64) and a 2024 survey rate that could not be found. Employment is 91.5% informal in 2024, according to the daily Nation, which cites the national survey (ambiguous wording).

Gross enrolment in higher education is 2.7% in 2022 (World Bank); literacy among people aged 15 and over reaches 79.3% (IHS6 survey, 2024-2025).

How much does an employee cost in Malawi?

Rate used: €1 = 2,004.11 MWK, the official rate of the central bank (RBM) on 21 October 2026. The parallel market quoted about 4,400 MWK to the USD in July 2026 (EIU, via the press), against 1,734 MWK at the official rate. These euro amounts can change quickly.

Minimum wage and contributions

The minimum for the general category is MWK 157,500 a month (about €79) since 1 June 2026, up 25% on 2025. Source: the Minister of Labour, relayed by three consistent sources including the daily Nation; the text of the Gazette (official journal) could not be read. The employer pays at least 10% of salary towards retirement and 1% of the payroll towards training.

Market salaries

No consultancy guide. Two diverging sources: Africarrieres (a 2026 guide written with the help of AI, with no method) for junior and senior; Paylab (self-reported, fewer than 20 respondents, gross monthly) for "after 5 years".

JobJuniorMid-level (after 5 years)Senior

For customer service, Paylab gives MWK 182,898 to 522,471 across all levels (€91 to €261). The junior-to-senior gap for a developer is about ×2.3.

And with MaaSil?

A market salary is not the cost of a service. MaaSil's public price list is the same for every country: €55 to €100 excl. VAT per day for general profiles (about €1,150 excl. VAT a month). Senior developers: €120 to €250 excl. VAT per day. See the pricing.

105,013 inhabitants (59.0%).

What is the time difference with Europe?

Malawi is on UTC+2 all year: 1 h ahead of London in summer, 2 h in winter. Europe goes back to winter time overnight from 24 to 25 October 2026.

Reference cityWinterSummerShared hours (winter / summer)
London / Dublin+2 h+1 h7 h / 8 h
Paris / Brussels / Berlin+1 h0 h8 h / 9 h
Helsinki0 h−1 h9 h / 8 h

Difference: Malawi time minus the city's time; office hours of 9am to 6pm.

Languages and skills available

English, the only official language, is the mother tongue of only 1% of the population; Chichewa and Chitumbuka are the common languages. The EF 2025 index gives Malawi 465 points (84th out of 123); it rests on an online test taken by volunteers and does not measure customer service agents.

Infrastructure: internet, electricity, technology parks

Internet. 18.96% of the population uses it in 2024. Malawi does not appear in the Ookla speeds for March 2026 (Wikipedia list).

Electricity. Access covers 15.6% of the population in 2024. According to the IHS6 survey, 14.2% of households are connected to the grid; among them, 16.9% suffer outages every day and 36.5% several times a week. The operator ESCOM has published load-shedding schedules every week since late September, the latest covering 18 to 24 October 2026. A general outage lasted from 07:11 to 10:34 on 2 August 2026. A diesel shortage had lasted about three weeks by mid-October 2026 (Further Africa).

No park dedicated to BPO is documented.

Data protection and employment law

Data. The 2024 data protection act has been in force since 3 June 2024 (authority: MACRA). Under its section 53, ordinary entities are exempt for 24 months, that is until 3 June 2026. The European Commission has adopted no adequacy decision for Malawi: transfers from Europe rely on standard contractual clauses.

Employment law. Text consulted: the Employment Act of 2000, in a 2009 copy (later amendments possible). Normal working time: 48 hours a week; paid leave: 15 to 18 working days depending on the week; probation of a skilled worker: 12 months at most. The text says nothing about employment agencies, the provision of staff or labour subcontracting. A revision of the legislation was announced on 1 May 2026. Advice from a Malawian lawyer is still needed for any arrangement.

Practical information: currency, public holidays, flights and visas

Currency. The official rate has stayed around 1,734 to 1,751 MWK to the USD since the devaluation of November 2023. Inflation is 20.01% in August 2026 (NSO, via the press); no IMF programme is under way.

Public holidays and flights. A payroll guide counts 14 public holidays in 2026 (official list not found). No direct flight from Paris or London is listed to Lilongwe.

Visa. According to France Diplomatie, French citizens need a visa since 3 January 2026 (e-visa at USD 50). The same page requires a business visa obtained before departure (USD 75) and reports a rise in assaults in Lilongwe (updated 27 August 2026).

  2. two interviews;
  3. technical tests;
  4. presentation of the candidate to the client.

MaaSil gives about one month to recruit and four weeks to reach full autonomy. It states that its consultants are 100% integrated into the client's teams, which direct the assignments. Contact us.
